Description - BFBDFA Low B
I made up this tuning when I broke string 1 on my guitar and replaced it with the same string gauge as string 2 I used Ernie Ball Skinny Top Heavy Bottoms for strings 2 through 6 and a 013 gauge Ernie Ball string for string 1 This tuning sounds really nice to me I think it works best for heavier stuff and it also sounds great with reverb and other effects
Tuning Analysis: BFBDFA Low B
The 'BFBDFA Low B' tuning, created out of necessity by its author, offers a distinct and powerful sonic landscape. Originating from a situation requiring a replacement for string 1 with a heavier gauge, this tuning transforms a standard guitar into a formidable instrument particularly suited for heavier musical styles. The creator noted its appeal for "heavier stuff" and its synergy with reverb and other effects, suggesting a sound that can be both massive and atmospheric.
Technical Observations
This open tuning comprises the notes B1-F#3-B2-D#4-F#4-A#4 (from low E to high E string positions). When strummed open, these notes form a rich and resonant B Major 7 chord (B, D#, F#, A#). The inclusion of B at the 6th and 4th string positions, along with F# on the 5th and 2nd, provides a deep and full voicing of this chord across the instrument's range.
- The extremely low B1 on the 6th string provides a deep, guttural foundation, ideal for crushing riffs and heavy power chords, underpinning the 'heavier stuff' mentioned by the creator.
- The arrangement of the lower strings (B1, F#3, B2) makes for easily accessible power chords and octave shapes, lending itself well to riff-based music.
- The open B Major 7 chord (B, D#, F#, A#) itself offers a sophisticated, full, and somewhat melancholic or ethereal quality, which can be used to create expansive soundscapes when paired with effects like reverb, or to add harmonic complexity to heavy passages.
- The tuning's design, with several strings tuned down significantly (ranging from 3 to 6 semitones), aligns perfectly with the creator's choice of heavier string gauges like Ernie Ball Skinny Top Heavy Bottoms and a .013 gauge for string 1. Tuning down by 4 or more semitones often necessitates a heavier string to maintain proper tension and intonation, preventing floppiness and ensuring clarity, which has been thoughtfully addressed in this tuning's conception.
This tuning offers a unique blend of heavy low-end power and sophisticated harmonic potential, making it versatile for both aggressive riffing and atmospheric sound design.
