DADFAF DADFAF - Guitar tuning, chords & scales
The 'DADFAF' tuning, which the user describes as 'i made itup', is a resonant and harmonically rich alteration, particularly well-suited for a variety of musical genres that benefit from open, droning sounds. This tuning creates an immediate sense of depth and can evoke melancholic, introspective, or even uplifting moods depending on the played melodies.
Technically, the open strings are tuned to D2-A2-D3-F3-A3-F4. Analyzing the intervals from the lowest D, we find a prominent D minor triad (D-F-A) stacked across the strings. The structure features the root (D), perfect fifth (A), octave (D), minor third (F), another octave of the fifth (A), and another octave of the minor third (F). This creates an incredibly full and harmonically complete D minor chord when all strings are strummed open.
Due to this intrinsic D minor voicing, the tuning makes playing D minor chords effortless and provides a fantastic foundation for exploring minor key progressions. Barring across a single fret will naturally produce various minor chords along the neck (e.g., barring at the 2nd fret will yield an E minor, 3rd fret an F minor, and so on). The presence of F and A also allows for easy access to F major shapes, often appearing as F6 or Fsus2 voicings. This tuning encourages a style of playing that leverages drones and open string resonance, making it inspiring for new musical ideas.
