DGCF D STANDARD BASS GUITAR - Bass Electric tuning, chords & scales
Overview: D Standard for Bass Guitar
The D Standard Bass Tuning is a popular choice for bass players looking to achieve a deeper, heavier sound than traditional E Standard. As its name suggests, every string is tuned down a full step (two semitones) from the common E-A-D-G configuration. This creates a darker sonic landscape, making it a favorite in genres like metal, hard rock, and stoner rock, where a thicker bottom end is desired. It can also be very useful for vocalists who sing in lower registers, allowing the bass to complement the vocal melody more naturally.
Technical Analysis
This tuning maintains the perfect fourth intervals between all strings, which means that all the scale shapes, arpeggios, and chord voicings you've learned in standard tuning remain exactly the same, just shifted down in pitch. This makes transitioning to D Standard relatively straightforward for players already familiar with E Standard. The open notes for this 4-string bass tuning are:
- 4th String: D2 (two semitones below E2)
- 3rd String: G2 (two semitones below A2)
- 2nd String: C3 (two semitones below D3)
- 1st String: F3 (two semitones below G3)
The consistent perfect fourth intervals (D-G, G-C, C-F) make it easy to play common bass patterns, including root-5th power chords across adjacent strings, as well as octaves. For example, playing the 4th string open (D) and the 3rd string at the 5th fret (C) will yield a D and C note, while the 4th string open (D) and the 2nd string at the 5th fret (C) will also be useful for various melodic and harmonic approaches. This tuning offers a solid foundation for deep, resonant bass lines, and the familiar interval structure ensures that much of your existing technique will transfer seamlessly.
How to Tune Your Bass to D Standard
To achieve D Standard tuning from a standard E-A-D-G setup, you will need to tune each string down by two semitones. Follow these steps carefully:
- 4th String (E String): Tune down 2 semitones from E2 to D2.
- 3rd String (A String): Tune down 2 semitones from A2 to G2.
- 2nd String (D String): Tune down 2 semitones from D3 to C3.
- 1st String (G String): Tune down 2 semitones from G3 to F3.
Important Note: Tuning down by two semitones for all strings is generally safe with standard string gauges and does not typically require a different gauge. However, if you find the strings feel too loose or floppy for your playing style, or if you prefer a tighter feel and greater clarity, consider experimenting with a slightly heavier gauge set to restore tension and improve tone.
4th String: D2 (Low D)
3rd String: G2
2nd String: C3
1st String: F3 (High F)
