EBEB Piccolo Bass Tuner

EBEB E5 - Piccolo Bass tuning, chords & scales

Description - E5

Piccolo Bass Tenor, blues fuzz style

This unique tuning transforms your Electric Bass into a vibrant 'Piccolo Bass Tenor' instrument, as described in its original 'blues fuzz style' designation. We've named it the 'Piccolo E5 Power Bass' because it naturally opens into a powerful E5 chord, delivering a rich, full sound with strong fundamental and overtone series. It's an excellent choice for players seeking a thick, resonant low end with an extended melodic range, perfect for driving basslines or even melodic passages that sit higher in the mix.

Technical Analysis

The open strings are set to E1, B1, E2, B2 (from lowest to highest). This configuration creates a compelling harmonic structure:

  • The interval between String 4 (E1) and String 3 (B1) is a Perfect Fifth (7 semitones).
  • The interval between String 3 (B1) and String 2 (E2) is a Perfect Fourth (5 semitones).
  • The interval between String 2 (E2) and String 1 (B2) is a Perfect Fifth (7 semitones).

The resulting open chord is an E5 (E-B-E-B), which inherently provides a strong power chord foundation. This structure significantly simplifies playing various E and B-based power chords across the fretboard and encourages a harmonically rich approach to bass playing. Due to the repeated E and B notes, octaves are readily available. Furthermore, common E Major/Minor and B Major/Minor triads are easily within reach with minimal fretting, making this tuning versatile for both chordal and melodic playing. The higher octave notes (relative to standard bass tuning) extend the melodic possibilities, making it suitable for soloing or intricate melodic lines typically found on a baritone or tenor guitar, while retaining the bass's sonic character.

How to Tune Your Bass to Piccolo E5 Power Bass

To achieve this unique tuning, adjust your strings as follows:

  • String 4 (Lowest): Tune down 7 semitones to E1. This is a very significant change in tension. For optimal performance and to prevent string damage, a different gauge string specifically designed for higher tunings or piccolo bass setups is strongly advised.
  • String 3: Tune down 5 semitones to B1. This is a substantial change in tension. A different gauge string is strongly advised.
  • String 2: Tune down 5 semitones to E2. This is a substantial change in tension. A different gauge string is strongly advised.
  • String 1 (Highest): Tune down 3 semitones to B2. This change is generally manageable with standard strings, but always proceed with caution and monitor string tension.

Note: When tuning strings significantly up or down (exceeding 4 semitones in either direction), it is generally recommended to use a different gauge string to maintain proper tension, intonation, and string life. Always tune gradually and carefully.
