Description - Open E 7/6 (seven Six)
i found this while experimenting with alternate tunings! the open chord is an e 7/6 (a c#/dbm9 if you look it up, but an enharmonic e 7/6, to my ears). it's a conflicted, airy chord on an open strum, and it seems to play well with a number of caged chord shapes from standard tuning***. it also features a few very intuitive and ergonomic ways to play a major scale -- i'll leave those to you to figure out ;)***
This unique tuning, aptly named "Open E 7/6 (Seven Six)" by its creator, is the result of experimental exploration into alternate tunings. It presents a rich, somewhat conflicted, and airy open chord that resonates with a distinctive character.
Verbal Analysis
Upon an open strum, the tuning immediately yields an E Major 7th chord with an added 6th (Emaj7(add6)). The creator describes it as an "E 7/6," noting its potential interpretation as a C#/Db minor 9th (C#m9) if viewed from a different root, though the predominant feel is rooted in E due to the lowest string. This combination of notes creates a sophisticated and somewhat melancholic yet bright tonality, offering a broad harmonic palette for composition. Its airy quality suggests suitability for ambient, jazz, or folk styles where extended harmonies are desired. The tuning is reported to surprisingly complement various CAGED chord shapes from standard tuning, opening up familiar pathways for improvisation and chord voicings. Furthermore, the designer hints at intuitive and ergonomic major scale patterns, encouraging players to explore its melodic possibilities.
Technical Analysis
The open strings are tuned to E2 C#4 E3 G#4 B3 D#5. Analysing these notes reveals the following intervals from the root E:
- E (Root)
- G# (Major 3rd)
- B (Perfect 5th)
- C# (Major 6th / 13th)
- D# (Major 7th)
This configuration precisely forms an Emaj7(add6) chord (E-G#-B-D#-C#). The presence of both the Major 7th (D#) and Major 6th (C#) adds significant harmonic tension and color, contributing to the "conflicted, airy" sound mentioned by the creator. The wide intervallic jumps, particularly the presence of C#4 and G#4, add to the brightness and chime-like quality of the tuning. The unison E notes (E2 and E3) provide a strong root foundation across different octaves.
How to Tune to Open E 7/6
To achieve this unique tuning, start from standard EADGBe tuning. Please pay close attention to the semitone adjustments for each string, as some involve significant tension changes. For any string requiring a movement of 4 semitones or more (up or down), consider using a different string gauge to ensure optimal playability and prevent string breakage.
- 6th String (Low E): Keep as is; no change (0 semitones).
- 5th String (A): Tune up 4 semitones. Caution: Tuning up by 4 semitones significantly increases string tension. Consider a lighter gauge string for this adjustment.
- 4th String (D): Tune up 2 semitones.
- 3rd String (G): Tune up 1 semitone.
- 2nd String (B): Keep as is; no change (0 semitones).
- 1st String (High E): Tune down 1 semitone.
Always tune carefully and incrementally to avoid over-tightening or snapping strings.
The Open E 7/6 (Seven Six) tuning features the following notes for each string, from the lowest (6th) to the highest (1st):
- 6th String (Low E): E2
- 5th String (A): C#4
- 4th String (D): E3
- 3rd String (G): G#4
- 2nd String (B): B3
- 1st String (High E): D#5
