FCFACF Low Open F - Guitar tuning, chords & scales
The "Low Open F" tuning is a formidable and deeply resonant setup designed specifically for achieving a heavy, metal-oriented sound. As its name suggests, it's essentially an Open F tuning transposed down an entire octave, pushing the boundaries of conventional guitar tunings into much lower registers. This creates an incredibly dark, thick, and powerful sonic landscape, perfect for crushing riffs and guttural chugging that define genres like doom, death, and modern progressive metal.
Technical Analysis
When strummed open, all six strings combine to form a full F Major chord (F-C-F-A-C-F) across multiple octaves, from the sub-bass F1 to a mid-range F3. This allows for massive, sustained chordal sounds with minimal effort, making it ideal for creating powerful rhythmic foundations. The prevalence of the root (F) and fifth (C) across the lower strings (F1, C2, F2) inherently facilitates easy access to power chords and drone notes. By simply barring across a single fret, you can effortlessly shift the entire F Major chord up or down the fretboard, creating a wall of sound. The incredibly low F1 and C2 strings also provide a deep, resonant foundation for single-note melodic lines or heavy, percussive chugging. This tuning is particularly effective for rhythmic playing, where the open strings can act as a natural drone, enhancing the thickness and impact of your riffs.
How to Tune
Given the extreme drop in pitch for all strings, it is highly recommended to use significantly heavier gauge strings than standard sets to maintain playability, intonation, and to prevent damage to your guitar. Tuning a string down by more than 4 semitones generally necessitates a different string gauge to ensure optimal performance and to prevent strings from becoming too loose or buzzing.
- 6th String (Low E): Tune down 11 semitones from E2 to F1.
- 5th String (A): Tune down 9 semitones from A2 to C2.
- 4th String (D): Tune down 9 semitones from D3 to F2.
- 3rd String (G): Tune down 10 semitones from G3 to A2.
- 2nd String (B): Tune down 11 semitones from B3 to C3.
- 1st String (High E): Tune down 11 semitones from E4 to F3.
