GDGBDG Low Open G - Guitar tuning, chords & scales

Description - Low Open G

Open G but an octave down. For metal.

Tuning Analysis: Low Open G

The Low Open G tuning is a formidable and deeply resonant setup, taking the familiar Open G structure and dropping it significantly into the lower octaves. As its description suggests, this tuning is perfectly engineered for the crushing demands of metal and other heavy genres, providing a truly seismic sonic foundation.

Verbal Analysis

Imagine the power of Open G but with a raw, guttural depth that vibrates through your very core. This tuning provides an immediate, full-bodied G Major chord (G-D-G-B-D-G) across all open strings, allowing for massive, droning riffs and incredibly heavy chord voicings. The extreme low register of the G1 on the 6th string creates a thunderous impact, making it ideal for downtuned chugging, expansive soundscapes, and delivering unparalleled sonic weight. It's a tuning that demands attention and provides an almost tactile experience of low-end resonance, perfect for evoking dark, heavy moods and driving, aggressive rhythms.

Technical Analysis

The Low Open G tuning sets the strings to G1-D2-G2-B2-D3-G3 (from low to high). This arrangement meticulously constructs a G Major chord across all six strings:

  • 6th String (G1): The root note, providing an exceptionally low foundation.
  • 5th String (D2): The perfect fifth of G.
  • 4th String (G2): Another root note, an octave above the 6th string.
  • 3rd String (B2): The major third, giving the chord its major quality.
  • 2nd String (D3): Another perfect fifth, an octave above the 5th string.
  • 1st String (G3): The highest root note, completing the full G Major chord voicing.

Compared to standard Open G (often D2-G2-D3-G3-B3-D4 or G2-G2-D3-G3-B3-D4), this tuning is dramatically lower. The lowest G is an entire octave below the typical 6th string G of some Open G variations, and even further below the D2 of the common DGDGBD Open G. This extensive down-tuning necessitates a much heavier gauge string set to maintain proper playability, intonation, and string tension, especially for the lower strings.

Open Chords and Voicings

The most obvious advantage is the immediate G Major chord when strumming all open strings. This allows for simple, one-finger bar chords across any fret to achieve different major chords (e.g., barring at the 1st fret yields G# Major, 2nd fret yields A Major, etc.). Beyond this:

  • Power Chords: Easily formed using two or three fingers on the lower strings (6-5, 5-4, or 6-5-4) by simply fretting the desired root and its fifth, or doubling the root. For example, fretting the 6th string at the 3rd fret (A1) and the 5th string at the 3rd fret (E2) yields an A power chord (A-E).
  • Triads: The G-B-D sequence on strings 4-3-2 provides a G major triad. Shifting this shape up or down the neck, or across different string sets, allows for exploration of other triads.
  • Drones and Riffs: The extremely low G1 is perfect for sustained open-string drones, allowing lead lines or melodies to be played over a deeply resonant foundation. The inherent major tonality lends itself to both aggressive, driving riffs and more atmospheric, melodic passages, provided they maintain that heavy low-end focus.

How to Tune

To achieve the Low Open G tuning, you will need to significantly loosen the tension on all your guitar strings. Due to the extreme down-tuning required for every string (exceeding 4 semitones), using a much heavier gauge string set is highly recommended to maintain proper string tension, intonation, and playability. Standard gauge strings will feel very loose, may buzz excessively, and will likely not intonate correctly.

  • String 6 (Low E to G1): Tune down 9 semitones from E2 to G1.
  • String 5 (A to D2): Tune down 7 semitones from A2 to D2.
  • String 4 (D to G2): Tune down 7 semitones from D3 to G2.
  • String 3 (G to B2): Tune down 8 semitones from G3 to B2.
  • String 2 (B to D3): Tune down 9 semitones from B3 to D3.
  • String 1 (High E to G3): Tune down 9 semitones from E4 to G3.

The Low Open G tuning sets your guitar strings as follows (from low to high):

  • String 6 (Low E string): Tuned to G1
  • String 5 (A string): Tuned to D2
  • String 4 (D string): Tuned to G2
  • String 3 (G string): Tuned to B2
  • String 2 (B string): Tuned to D3
  • String 1 (High E string): Tuned to G3
