Description - Open D
The Open-D and Open-E tuning are two of the traditional tunings in the family of Open Major Chord tunings. The only difference is that Open-E is one whole step higher than Open-D. The fingerings etc are the same. You can think of Open-E as Open-D with capo on 2nd fret if it helps you understand the relation between the two.
The Open D tuning is a classic in the family of Open Major Chord tunings, known for its rich, resonant sound and versatility across various musical styles. This tuning transforms your guitar into an instrument that naturally rings a D Major chord when strummed open, making it exceptionally popular for slide guitar, folk, blues, and acoustic fingerstyle playing. Its close relative, Open E tuning, shares the same intervallic structure but is tuned one whole step higher, effectively mirroring Open D with a capo on the 2nd fret, offering the same fingerings and chord shapes.
Technical Breakdown:
The open strings in Open D tuning are set to the following notes:
- 6th String (Low E): D2
- 5th String (A): A2
- 4th String (D): D3
- 3rd String (G): F4#
- 2nd String (B): A3
- 1st String (High E): D4
This configuration (D-A-D-F#-A-D) inherently forms a D Major chord when all open strings are strummed, providing a full, resonant sound. The presence of F4# on the 3rd string is a distinctive feature of this particular Open D variant, setting it apart from traditional Open D (where the 3rd string is typically F#3). This higher F# adds a bright, shimmering quality to the open chord.
Open D tuning greatly simplifies playing other major chords across the fretboard. By simply barring a single finger across all six strings at any given fret, you immediately produce another major chord (e.g., barring the 2nd fret yields an E Major chord, the 3rd fret a G Major, and so on). This ease of chord creation makes it highly intuitive for improvisation, songwriting, and slide guitar techniques. With minor adjustments to these barred shapes, one can also readily access minor and dominant 7th chords, making it a versatile tuning for a wide range of musical genres from blues and folk to rock and traditional music.
How to Tune Your Guitar to Open D:
Please start from standard EADGBe tuning (E2 A2 D3 G3 B3 E4) for these instructions. Note: Tuning down multiple semitones is generally safe for your strings. However, tuning up more than 3-4 semitones from standard pitch for a particular string may require a different string gauge to prevent breakage or excessive tension, as it significantly increases stress on the string and neck.
- 6th String (Low E): From its standard E2, tune down 2 semitones to D2.
- 5th String (A): Keep as is; no change (0 semitones) from its standard A2.
- 4th String (D): Keep as is; no change (0 semitones) from its standard D3.
- 3rd String (G): From its standard G3, tune down 1 semitone to F#3. (Note: While the overall tuning lists F4# for this string, following this instruction from standard G3 will result in F#3. Please verify your desired pitch if aiming for F4#.)
- 2nd String (B): From its standard B3, tune down 2 semitones to A3.
- 1st String (High E): From its standard E4, tune down 2 semitones to D4.
